Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital offering free mammograms to qualifying women in May

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital is offering free 3-D mammogram screenings throughout May for those that are uninsured.

Phoebe’s Carlton Breast Center is providing free mammograms to the first 100 women who make appointments and Phoebe Sumter is providing free mammograms to the first 50 women.

But there are qualifications. To be considered for one of the free breast tomosynthesis screenings, each applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months
  • Age 40 or older
  • Not experiencing any breast problems, (if you are experiencing breast problems, contact your doctor immediately)
  • Uninsured
  • Not pregnant
  • Must have a referring physician

Those interested in getting the free mammogram at the Carlton Breast Center must live in one of the following counties: Baker, Calhoun, Colquitt, Crisp, Dougherty, Early, Lee, Miller, Mitchell, Randolph, Sumter, Terrell, Tift, Turner and Worth.

Those going to Phoebe Sumter must live in Sumter, Schley, Macon, Marion, Dooly, Webster, Stewart, or Taylor.

“Ensuring access to advanced breast cancer screening technologies for all women, especially those who are uninsured, is a critical step towards early detection and treatment,” said Ursula Mathis-Dennis, Oncology Quality Director at the Phoebe Cancer Center. “By offering 100 free 3-D mammograms this May, we are not only honoring mothers and women’s health, but we are also leveraging cutting-edge technology to potentially save lives. Our commitment is to the wellbeing of our community, and we hope that through this initiative, we can make a significant difference in the lives of many.”

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women. According to the American Cancer Society, in 2024, nearly 310,720 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed, roughly 56,500 new cases of ductal carcinoma in situ will be diagnosed (DCIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer), and nearly 42,250 people will lose their battle with the disease.

Those interested in scheduling an appointment at Phoebe Sumter, should call Phoebe Patient Contact Center at (229) 931-1375. Scheduling for free mammograms at both facilities will begin Wednesday, April 22.
