HIGHGATE - The MVU Thunderbirds girls’ basketball team hosted the visiting Middlebury Tigers on Wednesday, Feb 1. The two teams wore pink, and all proceeds for the game went to support breast cancer awareness. It was a closely contested game for all four quarters of action. Middlebury scored the final basket and won by a score of 55-53.

Destinee Pigeon opened the game for the MVU offense with a three-pointer. The Middlebury offense didn’t take long to answer, and the game was off to a back-and-forth start. A Kassandra Reynolds three at the buzzer gave MVU a 17-14 lead going into quarter number two.

McKenzie Vincent got the MVU offense rolling in the second quarter of action. With 4:14 left in the quarter, Middlebury took the lead off a three-point shot. A Pigeon three was able to tie the game 22-22 with 3:25 left in the quarter. Pigeon's third three of the game pushed MVU to a 27 - 26 lead just a few minutes later. Middlebury was able to take the lead with 1:46 left in the quarter. Vincent pushed across two more baskets in the quarter for MVU, and the game went into halftime with the teams knotted at 31. Pigeon led the half for the Thunderbirds with eleven points. Alexandra Bourdeau and McKenzie Vincent followed with six points a piece.

The third quarter was full of more back-and-forth offense between the two teams. At the end of three MVU led 44 - 43.

Avery Guyette scored the opening basket of the fourth quarter, putting MVU up 46 - 43. Middlebury responded with a basket of their own, and the fourth quarter started the same way as the others, with back-and-forth offense. Pigeon hit a free throw with 1:46 left to put the Thunderbirds up, but a Middlebury three with 16 seconds left would solidify the game for the Tigers.
