Caledonia defeats Grandville 50-40 as offenses light up the scoreboard

GRANDVILLE, MI-- It was a battle of the unbeatens Friday evening as Grandville hosted Caledonia in week 5 football action.

Calendonia started the game hot, taking a 21-8 lead into the second quarter behind two throwing and a touchdown run from Fighting Scots senior quarterback Mason McKenzie.

Grandville had some answers on offense in the second quarter, cutting the score to 28-22 at halftime.

The second half started with an offensive explosion with McKenzie breaking free for a 70-yard touchdown run. A few minutes later, Grandville answered with a Carson Kopko 41-yard touchdown run.

Caledonia’s offense continued to outpace Grandville’s offense through the fourth quarter.

Caledonia defense would hold off Grandville at the end for a 50-40 victory. The Scots remain unbeaten for the season.

McKenzie would finish the game with four rushing and three passing touchdowns. The Scots finished with 541 yards of total offense. Grandville rushed the ball for 466 yards and would finish with 524 yards of total offense.

The students sections were packed for both teams and the Grandville students were decked out for a pink-out to raise awareness for breast cancer. At halftime, the Grandville marching band performed “Once there was a Tree”, where they had a dozen wooden trees scattered throughout the field.

Next week Caledonia (5-0) returns home to take on East Kentwood (3-2) and Grandville (4-1) heads north to take on Rockford (5-0). Both games are scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30.
