Vodafone Fiji handed over a cheque of $25,000 to the Fiji Cancer Society (FCS) for “PINKTOBER” – a month long awareness campaign on risks, early detection and prevention of Breast Cancer.

Speaking at the Vodafone headquarters in Suva yesterday Manager Human Resources, Moureen Chand said this year their Pinktober initiatives received an overwhelming response.

“The month of October is being observed across the globe as Breast Cancer awareness month and like every year, our staff and management got together to undertake a number of initiatives in the aim of both creating awareness on breast cancer and cancer in women as well as raise funds that will be handed over to the FCS to assist in the many initiatives they are undertaking to assist patients and their families.”

Ms Chand said throughout the month, they had engaged in a number of initiatives.

“We kick started our campaign with an official launch and awareness drive followed by a High Tea event. Our individual departments supported the campaign through “Bring and Buy” initiatives, magic show, raffles, Design a Bra Competition. “We closed our campaign with a fun filled walk,” she said.

“During the course of this campaign, we have become more aware of the symptoms, consequences, and the need for early detection through Dr Josese Turagava’s insightful presentation and sessions.

“Our corporate clients and partners have also shown their appreciation.

“We also got together to have screening done for ourselves as well.”

Ms Chand added that as a responsible corporate citizen and the passion they had for the vanua, they would continue to play an important part in making the difference in the lives of the people and those affected by breast cancer.

She acknowledged the support from their staff, management, partners and clients for making the Pinktober campaign a success.

FCS chief executive officer, Belinda Chan, said the cheque they received was double the amount they received last year.

“Please accept our sincere gratitude and humble appreciation to you and all your partners for Pinktober,” she said.

“Now that you know the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, my advice to you is to start talking about it, start spreading the word to your friends and family members.”

She said the money would aid in resolving the logistical needs of the patients.
