Local students graduate, receive honors

The following students graduated with a Bachelor's degree from their respective colleges:

Colleen Cloonan of Hoboken received her Master of Arts degree from Salve Regina University in International Relations. Megan Fitzpatrick of Secaucus also earned a graduate degree in special education from James Madison University.

Saint Dominic students in summer programs

These following students from Saint Dominic Academy have been accepted into the following summer programs:

Maia Bustamante of Jersey City will be with the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Seminar, which is a three-day event that includes activities, workshops, reflective time, group time, a dance, parents program and lectures from several keynote speakers.

Mae Ebid of Hoboken was accepted to work with Projects Abroad High School Special programs, which is designed for teens 16 to 19 years old who are interested in developing communities around the world. She will be serving schools and care centers in Kathmandu, Nepal for four weeks.

Danielle Prekop of Jersey City will be competing for Team USA in the 2017 International Maccabi Games in Israel. She has been ranked by USA Swimming as #1 in New Jersey for the 200m IM and the 400m IM and was ranked 17th in the nation in the 200m IM and 22nd in the nation for the 400m IM.

Gabriella Swope of Lyndhurst will be in Surf City, N.C. to work at Sea Turtle Camp, which gives students the opportunity to learn about marine biology with hands-on experiential education. She will also be working in the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital.

Medical Center raises money for breast cancer awareness

Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck raised $155,000 during its 10th annual Walk for Mom breast cancer awareness walk on June 3. Over 700 people participated in the walk that began and ended at the hospital. The money raised will go towards 100 free mammograms for women in the area and breast cancer educational efforts.

The hospital also received one of the state's Population Health Heroes award, which was given to eight out of 47 applicants. Holy Name Medical Center's Asian Health Services earned the award for providing more than 60,000 medical, preventive and wellness care visits annually. They offer services to the community at the Teaneck campus along with three other locations in Closter, Englewood Cliffs and Paramus.

Local residents graduate from military training

U.S. Air Force Airman Devin N. Perez of North Bergen and U.S. Air Force 1st Class Kristine Marisse R. Climaco of Jersey City graduated from basic military training. They completed the training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, located in San Antonio.

Students complete college prep program

Six Hudson County students took part in SEEDS, a program designed to prepare top-performing high school students for highly-competitive colleges. Twenty-two students who lived within 25 miles of Newark graduated from the 17-month initiative and a three-week summer residency. The following Hudson County students will be attending these colleges:

Raquel Rojas and Sabrina Suazo, both of Union City High School, Rochester Institute of Technology; Karina Collazo of Union City High School, Villanova University; Marvin Vargas of Union City High School, Drew University; Niyata Johnson of Harrison High School, Stevens Institute of Technology; Thalia Mullings of Harrison High School, Rutgers University-Newark
