BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Breast Cancer Task Force mammogram standards were recently updated, and a local oncologist says it’s a positive change.

The task force is better-defining how often women should get mammograms.
Their previous standard was vague, recommending women between the ages of 40-and-50 to get mammograms.
Ascension Sacred Heart Bay Medical Oncologist Dr. Thomas Johnson says this standard was problematic because it didn’t inform women how often they should get mammograms.

Dr. Johnson says the task force’s recommendation now states that women between the ages of 40-and-50 should get mammograms every 2 years.

While this is an improvement, Dr. Johnson says he recommends women who don’t have a family history of breast cancer should get an annual mammogram beginning at 40 years old.
