YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A man fighting metastatic breast cancer, who was featured on WKBN during Breast Cancer Awareness month, passed away on Thursday.

Jerry Rubenstein and his wife, Debbie, welcomed First News into their home just outside of Cleveland in October.

Rubenstein shared his story about living with and fighting breast cancer for many years.

He was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 when he felt a lump in his breast. He was told it would not come back but in 2013, he was re-diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer — cancer that has spread to other organs.

Rubenstein made a point to speak publicly about having breast cancer because he said many men are embarrassed when they are diagnosed.

“I keep plugging away,” he said at the time. “I want to publicize it and let men know that they can get it because a lot of men don’t know that they have breast tissue, let alone that they could get breast cancer.”

Rubenstein is survived by his wife and two daughters.
